Horse Drawn Vehicles & Transport Collection

Our George Mossman collection of 51 horse-drawn vehicles is the largest of it’s kind in the UK. George Mossman of Caddington, collected, drove and restored horse drawn carriages for over 50 years and we’re proud to house his collection.

Our transport collection also includes:

• The Last Luton Tram
• Two Steam Rollers - one of them being the last of its kind in the country.

Industry and Commerce Collection

Urban and Rural trades

• Our collection features pre World War II agricultural items, as well as trade and craft artifacts from the 18th to mid 20th century

Bagshawe collection

• A delightful selection of trade and local craft items compiled by T.W. Bagshawe in the 1930s and 1940s

 Archive Material

• The Luton Guild Book - one of the stars of our collection! This is the official membership list of the Confraternity or Guild of the Holy Trinity Luton, covering the period of 1475-1546
• 100,000 individual items, including Franklin and Deacon’s architectural plans, relating to the development of Luton in the 20th century.
• School log books, from the early 1800s to the 1950s

Coins and Tokens

Clocks and Watches

• Featuring long case, mantle clocks and watches from notable local manufacturers, The collection includes two watches from well known, Bedfordshire born, clockmaker Thomas Tompion (1639-1713)

Military

• We're proud to display the collections of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment Trust
• Our collections include weaponry, memorabilia, medals, uniforms, equipment and images from the 16th Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot (1688-1881), Bedfordshire Regiment (1881-1919) and Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (1919-1958)

Archaeology & Natural Sciences Collection

Commercial Deposition Archaeology

• Our Archaeology Collection includes flint work, ceramic material, metalwork, worked bone and antler, worked leather, architectural fragments, human and animal bone
• Our collection also holds Saxon cemetery material from Argyll Avenue, the Worthington Smith collection, the excavated finds from Puddlehill and Grove Priory and the Shillington mirror

Geology, Palaeontology, Zoology, Botany and Invertebrates

• We’re proud to house a collection of national significance, including the Saunders Collection of Geology, Palaeontology and Botany, Verdcourt Mollusca Collection, Tebbs Lepidoptera Collection, Milne-Redhead Coleoptera Collection and the John Dony and Chris Dony Herbaria.
• We have over 100 local vertebrates, with a comprehensive collection of bird eggs!
• We have a major invertebrate collection, totaling over 30,000 specimens!
• Our collection also features Bedfordshire county herbarium, containing over 11,000 specimens, and a collection of local chalk invertebrate and vertebrate fossils
• A fascinating collection of rocks and minerals from around the world
