Caribbean Art Class: Archiving Through Drawing

This workshop, led by Community Textiles Artist Jasmine Karis, provides a safe, creative space
for participants to explore the rich stories of the Caribbean diaspora through abstract drawing
and mark-making. The workshop will incorporate tactile play with a variety of drawing materials
and natural pigments, offering participants the option to create individual fabric art pieces or
combine their work into a collective fabric sketchbook, which may be included in a larger
installation.
Participants will engage in drawing exercises such as continuous line drawing, non-dominant
hand drawing, and texture detailing, using Caribbean objects as inspiration to honour
personal and collective histories.

What to Bring:
● Personal Items: Attendees are encouraged to bring objects connected to their
Caribbean or British Caribbean experience (e.g., items of clothing, accessories, flags,
photographs, small household objects). These objects will serve as inspiration for the
drawing exercises.
