John Varney has completed his ten week basic training for National Service. He is waiting to join the 1st Battalion of the Regiment at El Ballah in Egypt.
He is a Bedfordshire man, Luton born and bred. After leaving school he was apprenticed to the Luton builder H. C. Jones, but then took two years out to do his National Service.
John Varney went on to serve out the rest of his National Service in Egypt with the Mortar Platoon of Support company and was promoted to Corporal. After National Service he joined the 5th Battalion of the Regiment as a ‘territorial’ soldier.
